Miri – 11 October 2012 – Lee Syin Kit, a graduate of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) was among the 12 recipients nationwide of the prestigious Best Accounting Graduate 2011 Award presented yearly by the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA).

The awards were presented at MICPA’s Excellence Awards 2011 event held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre recently.

Lee, a former student of the university’s School of Business, graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) in 2011. She was nominated for the award by her lecturers for her outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and active participation in campus life.

The MICPA Excellence Awards is an annual event organised to give recognition to undergraduate accounting students nationwide who excel in both academic and extra-curricular activities and demonstrate exemplary personal attributes.

Lee, who previously underwent an internship placement with PricewaterhouseCoopers, said she is proud to be among the top accounting students in the country.

“I owe my success to the excellent academics at Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business. Their classes are very well structured, focused and encourage stimulating discussions and critical thinking in students. They also gave me a lot of encouragement to excel,” she said.

Lee is also thankful for her involvement in the Curtin Accounting Club and the Malaysian Red Crescent (Voluntary Aid Detachment 57) at Curtin Sarawak, which helped her hone her leadership and entrepreneurial skills. She opined that students should not only strive for academic excellence but also develop soft skills that will help them in their future careers.

According to the head of the Department of Accounting in the School of Business, Dr. Anbalagan Krishnan, Curtin Sarawak’s accounting programme has produced many outstanding graduates and Lee is a shining example.

“Our accounting graduates have gained not only valuable technical knowledge from our experienced academic staff but also soft skills through their involvement in our student clubs and vibrant campus life. This combination has been of great benefit to our students and helped us produce graduates who are job-ready,” said Dr. Anbalagan.
