Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2013 to include fun activities for children

Children can meet clowns and mascots at the Kiddies' Corner.

Miri – 28 August 2013 – Children attending the annual Curtin Sarawak Open Day at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) this 14 September 2013 can look forward to a great time at the ‘Kiddies Corner’, one of the event’s most popular highlights each year.

Located in the spacious and air-conditioned event hall of the university’s Recreation & Event Centre, it will feature a number of attractions for children of all ages, including clowns and cartoon and movie character mascots, bouncy castles, a telematch, colouring contest and spelling bee, as well as face painting, board games, sand art and handicrafts.

The fun will start at 10.30 am with an hour-long telematch following pre-registration for the colouring contest and spelling bee from 9.30 am to 10.30 am. Early arrivals from 9.00 am onwards will have the opportunity to mingle and take photographs with the clowns and mascots, including Iron Man and Batman.

This will be followed by the colouring contest from 11.35 am to 12.45 pm. Sorina Ramli, head of the sub-committee coordinating the Kiddies Corner, said the contest is being organised in collaboration with local art school Global Art.

“Every year, we get some 150 to 200 children participating in the contest and we expect a similar number this year. Attractive prizes such as hampers sponsored by Curtin Sarawak and art class vouchers by Global Art await the top winners. There will also be a number of consolation prizes,” she said.

Sorina added that the contest will be divided into two categories: Category A for children aged 4 to 6 and Category B for those aged 7 to 9. Only crayons are allowed to be used and children participating in the contest are advised to bring their own. The prize-giving for the contest will be at 1.00 pm. Prizes will consist of vouchers and hampers.

It will be followed by the spelling bee from 1.45 pm to 2.45 pm, which will feature age categories similar to the colouring contest. The top three winners in both categories will win cash prizes, which will be presented at 2.50 pm.

All the Kiddies Corner activities are scheduled to end by 3.00 pm, allowing the children and their parents time to visit other showcases and activities before the official close of Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2013 at 5.00 pm.

Curtin Sarawak Open Day is that special occasion each year when Curtin Sarawak opens its doors and showcases all that it has to offer to the local community.

In addition to Global Art, other organisations supporting the Kiddies Corner are Pustaka Miri, Maybank and Wonders of Balloons.
