Curtin Young Associates organising educational camp for fourth and fifth formers

CYA members taking part in a workshop at the Curtin Sarawak campus

Miri – 14 May 2012 – The Curtin Young Associates (CYA), an exclusive club for secondary school students established by Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), is organising a 3-day, 2-night camp for its members at the Curtin Sarawak campus from 26 to 28 May 2012.

The theme of the camp, which will be supported by the university’s Student Recruitment Department, will be ‘What’s Next?’ and it is aimed at helping the participants make informed decisions about their future university careers and improve their communication and interpersonal skills.

The participants will take part in a variety of interesting and fun activities, including morning exercises, ice-breaking sessions, outdoor activities around the campus, movie sessions, interactive discussions and academic presentations.

The camp will be facilitated by lecturers of the School of Business and School of Engineering and Science; advisors of the CYA, student ambassadors of the John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA); members of the Curtin Excellence Educational Facilitating Team (Curtin E-FacT), AIESEC and Curtin Volunteers! (CV!); and staff of the University Life Department.

It is open to all registered members of the CYA. For fourth and fifth formers of secondary schools in Miri who are interested to participate can register through the CYA website at www.curtin.edu.my/cya/application_form.php. Alternatively, they can register through the CYA Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CurtinYoungAssociates?ref=tn_tnmn. A participation fee of RM35 per student applies.

The CYA, launched in 2010, is run by current students of Curtin Sarawak and has over 500 members. It regularly organises self-improvement camps, educational talks, pre-exam workshops, sports events and other activities for secondary school students. Its objective is to inspire secondary school students to pursue tertiary education as well as to create a community for young students of different social and cultural backgrounds to interact and expand their network of friends.

The benefits of membership in the CYA include up-to-date information on higher education, online academic support, useful study tips, access to updates on happenings and developments on the Curtin Sarawak campus, as well as participation in interesting competitions, activities and events exclusively for members.

Apart from that, members have the opportunity to network and establish friendships with other students, including Curtin Sarawak students, through the CYA network.
