What if studying Pharmacy could take you beyond the classroom—and across the world?
In March 2025, five IMU Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) students had the opportunity to do exactly that. As part of IMU’s Global Mobility Programme, they spent two exciting weeks at the University of Newcastle, Australia, gaining first-hand exposure to how pharmacists learn, work, and make a real impact on patients’ lives in a global healthcare system.
Learning Pharmacy the Real-World Way
From day one, the students were immersed in university life in Australia. They joined pharmacy workshops, clinical discussions, and hands-on lab sessions alongside local students—from first-years to final-years. These sessions focused on practical skills such as patient care, clinical decision-making, and problem-solving—key abilities every future pharmacist needs.
They also learned about how pharmacy is evolving globally. One standout session explored how pharmacists in Australia are now more involved in services such as prescribing for minor conditions, vaccinations, and women’s health—showing just how dynamic and future-ready the profession has become.
Inside Hospitals, Research Labs, and Community Pharmacies
The experience went far beyond lectures. At John Hunter Hospital, students discovered how hospital pharmacists support doctors and patients through medication management, clinical trials, and specialised care. They also visited a community pharmacy to see how pharmacists work closely with the public, providing advice, health services, and personalised care.
A visit to the Hunter Medical Research Institute opened their eyes to another side of pharmacy—research and innovation. Here, they saw how pharmacists contribute to scientific discoveries that improve treatments and healthcare outcomes worldwide.
Why This Matters for Future Pharmacy Students
This global exposure helped students understand that pharmacy is not just about medicines—it’s about patient care, innovation, research, and leadership in healthcare. It also showed how an IMU pharmacy degree prepares graduates to work confidently both locally and internationally.
At IMU, all Pharmacy students have access to similar opportunities through international academic visits, study placements, or research attachments. Every student also receives support through the Global Exposure Fund, making overseas experiences more accessible.
Your Pharmacy Journey Can Be Global
IMU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) allows students to:
- Complete the full programme at IMU, or
- Transfer to top partner universities such as the University of Otago, University of Tasmania, or University of Sydney
This flexibility gives students and parents confidence that an IMU pharmacy degree is globally recognised and aligned with international standards.
