SUMMARY:‘ECODAY’ at Curtin Malaysia aimed at raising environmental awareness among students and public
DESCRIPTION:Miri – 26 September 2017 – Curtin University\, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) student-run organisations Curtin Environmental Engineering Club (CEEC) and Curtin Dive Club (CDC) are co-organising an ‘ECODAY’ on 7 October 2017. \nOpen from 8 am to 5pm at the Curtin Malaysia campus here\, it is endorsed by the Malaysian Nature Society Miri Branch (MNS Miri) and Miri City Council and will involve student participants from Curtin Malaysia and other institutions in East Malaysia and Brunei\, as well as members of the public. \nThe aim of ‘ECODAY’ is to raise greater awareness of environmental conservation among students and the community through a fun and interactive event. It also aims to highlight the role of MNS and raise funds for projects being conducted by the MNS and other non-governmental organisations partnering in the event. \nParticipants from East Malaysia and Brunei will be participating in ‘ECODAY’ competitions\,  including a ‘Paint Miri Green’ art competition\, ‘Victoria Goes Green’ fashion show\, ‘Enlightening Through Creativity’ upcycling competition and ‘The Leprechaun’s Pot of Gold’ quiz with attractive prizes to be won in each. \nMeanwhile\, members of the public are invited to attend a ‘MNS Environmental Awareness Talk’ concerning the effects of beach litter and environmental issues in the Miri area by Associate Professor Dominique Dodge Wan of Curtin Malaysia. \nThey are also invited to talks entitled ‘Marine Fish Community Structure in Lundu\, Sarawak’ by Divemaster Alvin Ngau Anyie and ‘Community Structure of Marine Polychaete in Burung Island’ by Divemaster trainee Euanice Anak Teck Choi. \nAlvin and Euanice are both representatives from Co.Co. Dive\, a local dive operator\, and both hold Bachelor of Aquatic Resource Science and Management degrees from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). \nIqbal Abdollah\, branch chairperson of MNS Miri Branch\, remarked that as the local branch of the leading environmental non-governmental organisation in Malaysia\, MNS Miri is honoured to be associated with the event. He said all like-minded organisations\, be they in the private or government sectors or those that share the same passion in championing wildlife and cultural preservation\, should wholeheartedly support such events. \nThe Curtin Environmental Engineering Club (CEEC) aspires to build strong environmental awareness among the students and staff of Curtin Malaysia and in the larger community. Through its activities\, it also serves to provide opportunities for Curtin Malaysia students to contribute to the development of a greener and cleaner environment for all. \nThe Curtin Dive Club (CDC) has since its founding in 2014 focused on raising awareness of the region’s underwater parks among Curtin Malaysia’s students\, staff and alumni\, in addition to providing a platform for its members to grow their passion for diving and the environment through its various events.  \n‘ECODAY’ is being sponsored by Bright Optometrist\, Classic Asia Original Sdn.
