Curtin Malaysia prepares students for internships and job placements

Miri – 2 May 2023 – The Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently conducted workshops on resumé and cover letter writing and interview skills for students enrolled in its MKTG3009 Business Internship unit.

The MKTG3009 Business Internship unit is designed to equip students with the skills to create impactful professional resumés and cover letters, and self-promote and conduct themselves professionally during job interviews, to enhance their chances of securing internships and jobs. The unit also requires students to spend a minimum of 100 hours working with an employer on a business-related project.

The resumé and cover letter writing workshop was facilitated by Dr. Ho Jie Min, a lecturer in the Faculty of Business’ Department of Management, Marketing and Digital Business.

Dr. Ho emphasised the importance of well-crafted resumés and cover letters and discussed critical elements that should be included in both types of documents. She provided tips on how to make resumés and cover letters stand out to employers and shared examples of some creative strategies and best practices that students can employ when preparing their own documents.

At the end of the workshop, the students were given the opportunity to ask questions and get personalised advice on how to create effective resumés and cover letters. Dr Ho also encouraged the students to reach out to her for additional help if needed.

Meanwhile, at the workshop on interview skills, facilitator Dr. Anita Jimmie, a senior lecturer in the Department of WIL and Language at Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), briefed the students attending on the interview process and strategies for successful interviews.

She began the workshop with an overview of the interview process, including the importance of researching the company and position prior to the interview. The students were then given tips on how to answer common interview questions and pitch why they are the best candidate for the job.

Dr Anita also highlighted the importance of making a positive first impression and good body language, such as using eye contact and body posture to their advantage.

The students were also given the opportunity to practise their newly-acquired interview skills in a mock interview setting. To create an environment that was as close to reality as possible, a senior staff member from the Human Resources Department and an academic from the Faculty acted as the mock interviewers.

Both workshops concluded with debriefing sessions to give the students the opportunity to reflect on what they had learned, and also discuss the merits and challenges of joining the workforce as interns and fresh graduates.
