Curtin Malaysia Open Day on 14 October could change your life and inspire your future

Open Day set to attract huge crowds as in previous years.

Miri – 24 August 2017 – Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) will be holding its eleventh Open Day on 14 October 2017, and particularly if you are a future student, it will be an event that could very well change your life and inspire your future.

That is because the event is increasingly geared to giving future students an in-depth look at life at Curtin Malaysia, Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, including opportunities to explore facilities and interact with staff and current students.

Aptly themed ‘Discover. Experience. Interact’, the day will feature a Future Students Hub where future students can garner valuable information on courses and careers, and showcases of teaching and research excellence and innovation by Curtin Malaysia’s faculties and graduate school.

Faculties and graduate school to showcase teaching and research excellence and innovation.

The showcases will carry interesting themes like ‘Engineer’s Land’ (Faculty of Engineering and Science), ‘Entrepreneurs Hub’ (Faculty of Business), ‘The Human Planet’ (Faculty of Humanities) and ‘Spacetopia’ (Curtin Malaysia Graduate School). In addition to interesting facets of the faculties, visitors will get the chance to learn about innovations in engineering, science and technology, and the intriguing aspects of business and media.

There will also be faculty-run competitions open to secondary school students, offering attractive prizes and giveaways for participating teams.

The signature competition will be the ‘Curtin Croc Challenge’, Curtin Malaysia’s crocodile electronic early warning system design competition for students being organised by its Faculty of Engineering and Science and Office of Research and Development for the second year. Over 20 teams have registered to compete in schools and open categories for cash prizes totalling RM5,500. Visit openday.curtin.edu.my/croc-challenge/ for full details.

Other competitions are the ‘Curtin’s Next Top Entrepreneur’ and ‘Battle of The Brains Trivia Challenge’ organised by the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities respectively, and the grand final of the annual ‘Curtin Gaming Championship’, an online video game competition featuring DOTA 2, FIFA and League of Legends organised by the Curtin Malaysia Student Council with support from the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

The competitions and showcases are aimed at generating interest in the fields of study at Curtin Malaysia, which are engineering and science, business and humanities. The Future Students Hub will also highlight important aspects such as enrolment, scholarships and campus life, and guided tours of facilities will be conducted at set times.

“Open Day offers visitors an exciting taste of life at Curtin Malaysia, giving them a fun, hands-on learning experience in a festival-like atmosphere. Whether you’re a future student, parent or teacher, you’re sure to get a lot out of the activities throughout the day,” said chair of the Open Day organising committee, Nicholas Leong.

Leong said everyone is welcome to the event which attracts thousands of visitors each year, including several hundred secondary students accompanied by teachers and school counsellors.

Guided tours of facilities will be conducted for visitors.

Regular visitors to the Open Day will find comfort in perennial attractions like the live entertainment and the wide variety of food, retail and activity stalls run by student clubs and local businesses.

In support of local charities, the event will again feature a ‘Community Corner’ where visitors can learn more about various charitable and community causes in Miri.

Next to its graduation ceremonies, the Open Day is Curtin Malaysia’s most anticipated annual event. First started in 2006, it has become an annual fixture and a key event in the campus’ calendar of student recruitment and brand-building events. Each year, it involves a massive logistical effort and the support of a large number of staff and students and attracts visitors by the thousands. Over the last two years, close to 10,000 people have thronged the campus on Open Day.

This year’s Open Day is especially significant as it will be the first ‘Curtin Malaysia’ Open Day following the campus’ re-branding to Curtin Malaysia this year, and it is being held as part of the year-long celebrations to mark Curtin University’s 50th Year.
