Miri – 1 April 2016 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) senior lecturer Dr. Abey P. Philip’s dedication towards demonstrating excellence in teaching activities has won him the 2015 Curtin Business School (CBS) Teacher of the Year Award awarded by Curtin University in Australia.

Dr. Abey, from the Department of Finance and Banking of the Faculty of Business and Humanities, was conferred the award for his outstanding contributions towards the CBS’ priorities of enhancing student engagement and experiences; leadership in innovative education; and creating an interactive and personalised student learning environment.

His application for the award was judged by an expert panel comprising directors of Teaching and Learning within the CBS. In announcing the results, CBS Dean of Teaching and Learning Professor Paul de Lange said Curtin is lucky to attract staff of Dr. Abey’s calibre, as evident in the feedback from members of the judging panel.

Originally from Kerala, India, Dr. Abey has won numerous awards throughout his seven years at Curtin Sarawak. He previously won Curtin University’s Best Lecturer – Students Choice Award in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2015, and was the 2015 overall winner of the Best Lecturer Award for the Department of Finance and Banking.

He also won the Best Research Paper Award at the 2nd Annual International Conference on Micro and Macro Economics 2012 in Singapore; Curtin Sarawak’s Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award 2015; and Curtin University’s Excellence in Teaching Award 2015.

Commenting on his latest achievement, Dr. Abey said it is an honour to be recognised for his passion in teaching, adding that the opportunity to teach and engage young minds is the best reward in his profession.

“As an educator, my focus is on encouraging student participation in learning by applying social and human angles to the topics presented. This way, they are able to actively take part in class discussions and improve their critical thinking skills and the application of economic theories,” said Dr. Abey.

He thanked his students, colleagues and family for their unwavering support, as well as the CBS for conferring him the prestigious award.
