Public future students invited to Curtin Malaysia Open Day on Saturday

Huge crowds expected for Curtin Malaysia Open Day 2017.

Miri – 11 October 2017 – Members of the public, including future students and their parents, are invited to the eleventh Open Day of Curtin University, Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) at its campus this Saturday.

Themed ‘Discover, Experience, Interact’, the event is geared to giving them insights into life at Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, including opportunities to explore facilities and interact with staff and current students. It will be held in venues across the campus from 10 am to 5 pm.

Among the highlights will be the ‘Future Students Hub’ where future students can get meet marketing staff and get information on courses, and the ‘Faculty Showcases’ highlighting the teaching and research excellence of Curtin Malaysia’s three faculties and graduate school. Both will be located at the Recreation and Event Centre.

At the Faculty Showcases, visitors will get to try their hand at simple lab experiments, and learn about the applications of science, engineering and technology in industry and everyday life, as well as business concepts and the world of media and communication.

There will also be faculty-run competitions involving secondary school students from Sarawak and Sabah and members of the public. The main competition will be the ‘Curtin Croc Challenge’, Curtin Malaysia’s iconic crocodile electronic early warning system design competition being organised by its Faculty of Engineering and Science and Office of Research and Development. 26 teams will be competing in schools and open categories for cash prizes worth RM5,500. It will take place between 10 am and 5 pm at the Library & Auditorium Complex.

Other competitions are the ‘Curtin’s Next Top Entrepreneur’ and ‘Battle of The Brains Trivia Challenge’ organised by the Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities. Both will be from 10 am to 1 pm in the Faculty of Business building and Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre respectively.

There will also be the grand final of the ‘Curtin Gaming Championship’, an annual online video game competition organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Science which began on 26 September, from 10 am to 3 pm in The Auditorium.

Regular visitors to the Open Day will find perennial attractions like the live entertainment and the wide variety of food, retail and activity stalls run by student clubs and local businesses. The Student Council of Curtin Malaysia is organising its annual ‘Mr & Ms Curtin’ and ‘Curtin’s Got Talent’ contests for students as part of the stage entertainment, as well as a ‘Virtuoso Art Exhibition and Competition’ featuring the works of students and local artists.

In support of local charities, the event will again feature a ‘Community Corner’ where visitors can learn more about various charitable and community causes in Miri. 10 local non-governmental organisations (NGO) will be participating, including the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society which will be holding its ‘Curtin Malaysia GoBald Satellite Shave’ in collaboration with the university. Visitors to the Open Day are encouraged to shave their heads and make donations in aid of children with cancer and their families.

Next to its graduation ceremonies, the Open Day is Curtin Malaysia’s most anticipated annual event. First started in 2006, it has become an annual fixture and a key event in the campus’ calendar of student recruitment and brand-building events. Each year, it involves a massive logistical effort and the support of a large number of staff and students and attracts visitors by the thousands, including several hundred secondary school students.

This year’s Open Day is especially significant as it will be the first ‘Curtin Malaysia’ Open Day following the campus’ re-branding to Curtin Malaysia this year, and it is being held as part of the year-long celebrations to mark Curtin University’s 50th Year.

Organised by staff and students of the university, the event is supported by the Miri City Council and sponsors that include Curtin Malaysia Pro-Chancellor Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and Management Board Chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, City Advertising Sdn. Bhd., Exceed Management Sdn. Bhd., Grab Malaysia, Kiara Bumimas Sdn. Bhd., Kingdom Design Sdn. Bhd., Mindsmack Sdn. Bhd., Miri Concrete Sdn. Bhd., Prestige Advertising Sdn.
