Miri – 3 April 2012 – The Recreation and Event Centre at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) was a hive of activity recently when the over 30 student clubs on the university campus came together for the first-ever ‘Curtin Grand Club Expo’.

The half-day event gave the clubs the opportunity to showcase their activities and recruit new members from amongst the new and current students who have yet to actively engage in Curtin Sarawak’s vibrant student life, which caters to a wide range of academic, social, sporting and religious interests.

It was the brainchild of Student Council President and third-year Chemical Engineering student Alan Hok, who saw the need for such an event to raise awareness among students of the wide range of clubs and activities on campus and provide an opportunity for the clubs to recruit new members.

First mooted in December last year and involving considerable planning and coordination by Alan and his Student Council members with support from Curtin Sarawak’s University Life officers, the event was regarded as a huge success by the large number of students and staff who attended.

It was launched in a simple ceremony by Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair Inglis. Also present were Chief Operating Officer Nicholas Ching; Dean of the School of Business, Dr. Francois Therin; Dean of the School of Engineering and Science, Dr. Yudi Samyudia; Dean of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Beena Giridharan, and University Life Manager Haslina Malek.

“I have to admit it was not easy getting this event off the ground, especially rallying all the clubs and getting them to participate, in addition to having to deal with logistical and financial issues. Nevertheless, it was a good learning experience, and as you can see, it was well worth the effort,” commented Alan after the launch.
