Curtin Sarawak geology student awarded at Petroleum Geoscience Conference and Exhibition

Miri – 3 April 2013 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) applied geology final-year student Ching Siu Jeen Ho, 23, was recently awarded a Student Excellence Award at the 36th Petroleum Geoscience Conference and Exhibition (PGCE) 2013 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The award, which was sponsored by Exxon Mobil, included a 32GB iPad.

Other recipients of the award were from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Teknologi MARA and Universiti Teknologi Petronas.

Ching and her course mates Faidhi Yusoff, 23; Intan Mashitah Amir Basha, 23; and Malcolm Wong Kee Heng, 26; also took part in the Student-Industry Geo-Quiz competition in conjunction with the conference, emerging among the top five teams.

Ching commented that the award encourages and motivates students to excel in their field of interest and thanked Exxon Mobil for sponsoring the award.

“I would also like to especially thank Dr. Ramasamy Nagarajan, senior lecturer of applied geology and head of the Department of Applied Geology; senior lecturers Dr. M. V. Prasanna and Dr. Dominique Dodge-Wan, as well as my coursemates for their assistance and guidance throughout my studies at Curtin Sarawak,” she said.

Themed “Innovative Geoscience: Securing Energy Needs”, PGCE 2013 was attended by over 2,000 participants and offered an opportunity for geology students, in particular, to widen their industry networks and learn more about the latest in geoscience and the oil and gas industry.

The two-day event included a technical exhibition participated by various national and multinational companies, a student programme, short courses, geological field trips, golf tournament and gala dinner.
