Miri – 20 May 2013 – The Curtin Volunteers! (CV!) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) and the Miri Blood Bank recently co-organised a blood donation drive to help the blood bank replenish its blood stock.

Themed ‘The Life Saving Mission’, the bi-annual drive took place for four and half hours at the university’s Recreational and Event Centre. Blood was collected from 62 donors comprising students and staff, achieving the target set by the blood bank.

30 volunteers were also involved in promoting, and assisting at the event, including CV! advisor and university life coordinator Bryan Robson Bala.

According to organising chairperson Albert Marzuki, some 100 students and staff had volunteered to donate their blood, but following screening by the blood bank team, just over 60 were eligible.

He added that, in line with the event’s theme, the CV! managed to get a total of 100 students and staff to register as organ donors during the drive.

Meanwhile, Miri Blood Bank senior assistant information officer Lily Sinta commended the CV! for continuing to organise the bi-annual drive and for encouraging such a good turnout of potential donors.

The CV! wishes to acknowledge the sponsorship of DKSH Ayam Brand, Guinness Malta, Lim Yen Loong and Ling Chung Hao towards the event.

The CV! has been organising blood donation drives bi-annually since 2003 with significant support from students and staff. In addition, it has organised other activities and events such as beach cleaning campaigns, charity fundraisers, and community outreach projects in support of rural communities and local charities such as the Miri Sunflower Centre, Palliative Care Association Miri (PCAM), Piasau Animal Welfare Support (PAWS), Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), Methodist Children’s Home and Miri Mental Health Association.
