Miri – 5 April 2023 – 45 participants from various organisations including the Miri Immigration Office, Miri Hospital, National Anti-Drugs Agency (Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan Daerah Miri), Miri City Council, Riam Institute of Technology, IBS College, local schools and the media attended a videography workshop jointly organised by Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and Pustaka Miri last Saturday.

The workshop, which was aimed at providing an introduction to videography and utilising cinematography to create and edit videos, was held at Pustaka Miri and was conducted by lecturers Peter Jamba and Hanley Fong from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE) and Dr. Ngu Ik Ying from its Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences.

The attendees were given hands-on training and learned practical skills that they could apply in their respective professions and organisations. Besides learning the fundamentals of videography, such as basic cinematography, types of shots, and editing techniques, the participants were given the opportunity to showcase their skills by creating their own videos and sharing them with the other workshop participants.

Peter had high praise for the participants’ work during the sharing session.

“It’s amazing to see the creativity and skill demonstrated by everyone. Your videos are all quite impressive,” he remarked.

The workshop was part of a series of cultural awareness workshops and talks initiated by SPACE in collaboration with Pustaka Miri this year in the lead-up to Curtin Malaysia’s 25th anniversary next year. An earlier workshop on ‘Sarawak and International Traditional Games’ was held on 4 March 2023, and further workshops relating to digital and media literacy, cultural awareness, skills development, financial literacy, STEM, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are scheduled to be held between April and December. The next one will be on ‘Basic Online Collaborative Tools’ on 15 April 2023.

The objectives of the workshops and talks are to engage people in the Miri community and help them acquire new knowledge and lifelong learning skills for the workplace and daily life. All are facilitated by lecturers and professional staff of Curtin Malaysia.

Students, members of associations, staff of government departments and agencies, and others in the Miri community are welcome to join the workshops which are free of charge.

More information on the workshops and talks can be obtained by contacting SPACE’s administration team by email to [email protected] or Pustaka Miri by phone at 085-422525.
