Curtin Sarawak IChemE Student Chapter gives back to the community

‘The Giving Back Project’ team with teachers of SMK Chung Hua Miri.

Miri – 10 May 2016 – The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Student Branch of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently carried out its ‘The Giving Back Project’ in two secondary schools in Miri, SMK Chung Hua Miri and SMK Lutong.

While the primary aim of the project was to provide secondary school students a wider perspective of the fields of chemical and petroleum engineering, it also gave undergraduates of Curtin Sarawak the opportunity to give back to society, as part of the university’s ongoing community engagement initiatives.

Curtin Sarawak IChemE Student Branch members Sheron Lim, Voon Yi Hung, Yeo Jun Yi, Syarifah Nurliza and organising chairperson Rachel Yeo made up the team that delivered talks at the two schools.

Rachel remarked that the project was an effective medium for the students to find out more about the engineering profession and many showed a keen interest in pursuing future careers in engineering. She attributed its success to the hard work of her committee members and the support of Curtin Sarawak’s Marketing Department.

Curtin Sarawak IChemE Student Branch academic advisor Dr Bridgid Chin, meanwhile, said she looks forward to seeing more community engagement projects from the student branch in the future.

She commented that such activities allow Curtin Sarawak’s students to impart skills and values such as teamwork, accountability, self-confidence and mutual respect to younger students, while at the same time develop their own leadership skills.

Her colleague and co-advisor to the student branch, Dr Lau Shiew Wei, added that the project also encourages knowledge sharing among the participating secondary school students and the live testimonies from the speakers offer them insights into what university life is like.

The Curtin Sarawak IChemE Student Chapter is committed to promoting awareness among students of the latest advances in chemical engineering as well as creating opportunities for them to expand their professional networks.
