Learning the Framework from FrameMotion

Lyon Kong, the Associate Director of FrameMotion Studio.

FrameMotion Studio is one of the most prominent multimedia immersive content creators in Malaysia, having established in 2008. They recently visited The One Academy to deliver a sharing on the ‘Essentials of Projection Mapping and C4D’ to the students of Digital Media Design. The team of presenters from FrameMotion Studio were – Lyon Kong, Associate Director; Yap Heng Fong, Art Director; and Eric Chan, Technical Director.

Having started out as an advertising agency, FrameMotion has since transitioned towards the digital direction and now focuses on large-scale projection mapping. The session started with an introduction of the studio and their services by Lyon. It is an internationally acclaimed and innovative multimedia studio that specialises in services that include audiovisual production, multimedia and online applications, event productions and management, to provide one-of-a-kind experiences.

Its multidisciplinary team readily takes on any challenges and push the creative boundaries by creating the biggest projection mapping shows in the country and abroad. They presented a showreel on the works that they have done for the past 12 years, and included case studies from their projects such as the opening sequence for LAMPU 2019, car launching event for BMW, and an aerial drone show for TM’s Digital Malaysia 5G which utilised 555 drones to light up the night sky with dazzling formations and animations, earning it a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records.

In the next part, art director Heng Fong demonstrated a live process of projection mapping while the students watched on with rapt attention. He explained on the techniques that give the best desirable effects, saying “the essence of projection mapping is to create the illusion of depth.” Technical director Eric continued the session by introducing the best software to use, such as Resolume and Datadon Watchout, which will help the students when it comes to working on their own projects.

“Manage your expertise and work according to your own capabilities. Know well what can be done and what cannot. Don’t be overly ambitious and take on more than you can handle, otherwise it’s only going to create more problems,” offered Lyon in advice to the students on work ethics. It was a fruitful learning experience for the students who gained useful tips and know-hows as well as software techniques from the industry professionals.
