Students from The One Academy have bagged several Rookie Awards this year. The Rookie Awards is one of the world’s most renowned digital skills competition for aspiring creatives in games, animation, visual effects, immersive media, motion graphics and 3D visualization. It is the perfect platform for up-and-coming artists to show off their skills and showcase their amazing artworks and projects. This year’s award season received 4,405 entries from 523 schools throughout 91 countries worldwide.
The Rookie Awards announced their winners from three major categories – Rookie of the Year – Immersive Media, Game of the Year and Rookie of the Year – Product Design. Winning a Rookie Award paves the pathway to a bright future for students as it is highly recognized in the industry. The exposure and experience as well as the opportunity to compete with artists from all around the world is extremely gratifying for the students taking part in this annual competition.
Leow Wey Chung is the Rookie of the Year – Immersive Media Runner-Up, with his entry, “Rise of Métier”.
The One Academy students won the winner, runner-up and people’s choice title of Rookie of the Year – Immersive Media category. Law Yan Ming was crowned winner for her entry “Malaya Quest”, an AR interactive game created for children to learn the history of Malaysia in a fun, memorable way. The Runner-Up for Rookie of the Year – Immersive Media went to Leow Wey Chung, for his project “Rise of Métier”, a hand tracking VR game where players are able to use the knowledge and skill of their own occupation in reality as their superpower to fight off monsters in the Virtual World. The People’s Choice from the same category was awarded to Christen Chong Yi Qi for her entry, “Teng Hong Gong AR”. This project was an interactive AR language app for people to learn Malaysian Cantonese that won the hearts of many.
Christen Chong Yi Qi is the Rookie of the Year – Immersive Media – People’s Choice, with her entry, “Teng Hong Gong AR”.
The Runner-Up for the Rookie Award for Game of the Year – Immersive Media category went to Cecilia Kuan Jing Yi for her amazing work on “Nutrifood”. She created and designed “Nutrifood” as an interactive AR educational toolkit aimed to educate young children about maintaining and improving their eating habits. In the Rookie of the Year – Product Design category, the people’s choice award was given to Tan Joey for her masterpiece “Cabina de Sofá”, a multi-functional space saving couch design.
Cecilia Kuan Jing Yi is the Runner-Up for the Rookie Award for Game of the Year category with her entry, “Nutrifood”.
In addition, six students from The One Academy had their projects Highly Commended by the Rookies in this year’s competition, out of over thousands of entries. The passion, imagination, and incredible talent of these students have proven to be some of the best in the world.
Each entry was evaluated based on – creative skills, technical skills, presentation, complexity, raw talent and employment potential by a diverse judging panel of 150+ well-known industry experts. It is safe to say that the competition this year was intense and tougher than ever. Nevertheless, students from The One Academy managed to not only win honourable awards but gain recognition for their well-thought-out projects as well.
In The One Academy, it is more than just classroom learning, creating platforms for students to apply what they have learnt and show off their talents has always been part of the learning experience. Encouraging them to take part in international competitions as part of their programme not only boosts the students’ confidence but also prepares them for their future. Congratulations to these incredible students for representing their country and making a name for themselves in the international creative industry.
