4th UTAR Perak Campus Run

A total of 800 high-spirited runners participated in the 4th UTAR Perak Campus Run on 24 August 2014. Organised by Department of Student Affairs (DSA), the run was flagged off at the Sports Complex, Perak Campus by UTAR Council Member Hew Fen Yee at 7 am.

The organising chairperson of the run, Theva Das Sankaran from Sports and Recreation Unit of DSA said, “The 12km 4th UTAR Perak Campus Run was organised to promote healthy lifestyle and to foster community engagement. The outdoor activity brings together staff, students and members of the public for a friendly run through a very scenic route.”

The run was opened to staff and students in the UTAR Men’s and UTAR Women’s categories and to the members of the public in Men’s Open and Women’s Open categories. As early as 5.30 am, the Sport Complex became a hive of activity due to commencement of registration, distribution of ribbons and the arrival of students by bus from UTAR Kuala Lumpur Campus, Petaling Jaya Campus and Sungai Long Campus.

Also present at the event were UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Assoc Prof Dr Teh Chee Seng, Head of DSA Chiang Jeng Fong, sponsors, staff and students.

In the UTAR Men’s category, Banking and Finance student Goh Chun Seng, Foundation in Science student Collymore Tang Yong Fung, and UTAR staff Tan Guang Pin were the champion, first and second runners-up respectively. Foundation in Arts student Heah Wan Qing, Finance student Wong Kah Wei, and Business Administration student Teong Lee Sing were the champion, first and second runners-up respectively in the UTAR Women’s category.

Peh Yong Heng from Teluk Intan, Ipoh TAJ International College student Mahathir bin Hyder Ali, and S. Tanakendiran from Taiping were the champion, first and second runners-up respectively in the Men’s Open category. Sin Pei Chan, A. Previna and Loke Khuan Mee, were the champion, first and second runners-up respectively in the Women’s Open category.

The top three winners from each category took home RM300, RM200, and RM100 respectively. Each of these winners also received a trophy, medal and participation certificate.

Foundation in Arts student, Ng Ai Tsin who came all the way from Petaling Jaya Campus, enthused, “The run was very enjoyable as the route was scenic and well-marked with signs.”

Another participant, Senior Assistant Manager from UTAR Registrar Office Flora Dicka, said, “I learnt about team work from this run. My friends and I, we cheered for each other as we walked and ran to the finishing line together.” She added, “I also learned the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle regardless of age. The participants of this run really amazed me. They came from various age groups.”

The main sponsors for the run were Avante, RT Management, Grand Kampar Hotel, Sin Chew Daily, Kappa Sports Wear, Scud Retailers Sdn Bhd, Campus West City, Kampar Putra, and Yee Hup Food Holdings.

Ten trophies were given out for first 10 winners from each category and a total of 150 medals were given to the first 150 who completed therun. There were several student helpers who distributed mineral bottled drinks, sandwiches and certificate of completion to the runners at the finishing line.

There were also lucky draws, dance performances and music for the added fun and laughter.
