Curtin Malaysia petroleum engineering students learn about well completion hardware in online technical seminar

Miri – 27 August 2020 – With their lectures and tutorials having moved to online platforms in light of the COVID-19 pandemic since the last semester, petroleum engineering students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) are also continuing to get an effective learning experience through online technical seminars.

The most recent one was on ‘Well Completion Hardware’ conducted by PETRONAS Carigali well integrity engineer Chua Hing Leong, which saw the third-year students learning about well completion concepts and the purpose of well completion and design.

Chua described the main components of a completion string that should be installed into a well in order to maintain its performance and integrity. He elaborated on different well barriers that should be maintained to secure the well and production facilities from any undesirable events, and highlighted common well barrier practices in Malaysia.

He went on to talk about well completion equipment, describing common well completion components that can be attached to the tubing string and their functions, as well as giving many real-life examples and applications based on his work experiences.

In addition, Chua described multiple zone completion, which allows operators to selectively produce or comingle reservoir fluid from different zones into one well.

Chua is a chemical engineering graduate of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) with almost 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry as a field engineer, wireline manager and well intervention engineer.

Previously, he conducted a technical seminar for Curtin Malaysia petroleum engineering students on ‘Basic Completion Hardware (Equipment)’, which is relevant to Petroleum Production Technology, one of the core units in their Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering course, as well as to one of their petroleum engineering core activities related to well intervention.

Lecturer Associate Professor Hisham Ben Mahmud of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering, who organised the seminar, remarked that such opportunities to learn from, and engage with, experts from industry enhance the students’ learning outcomes and help them relate theories learnt in their classes to real-life applications.

In thanking Chua for his support of petroleum engineering studies at Curtin Malaysia, Associate Professor Hisham said Curtin Malaysia was fortunate to be located in Miri and the oil and gas hub in Sarawak, allowing significant access to industry knowledge and expertise.

Associate Professor Hisham added that the involvement of industry professionals in learning and teaching, as well as course development and other forms of partnership, have been crucial to the success and strengths of the engineering programmes at Curtin Malaysia.
