Miri – 25 April 2018 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has the distinction of being the first university in Malaysia to have an Institute of Marketing Malaysia (IMM) student charter after a group of its marketing students took the initiative to establish one with the support of IMM President Dato’ Sharifah Ismail and their club advisor, senior lecturer Dr. Shamsul Kamariah Abdullah.
Pioneered by a nine-member committee led by president Annithaa Pandiapp, a final-year Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Management) student, the Institute of Marketing Malaysia Student Charter (IMMSC) aims to provide a platform for students of all disciplines at Curtin Malaysia to hone their marketing knowledge and skills.
“We are not only for those majoring in marketing, but all students. We believe everyone, regardless of discipline, requires some degree of marketing knowledge in today’s world,” commented Annithaa.
She said that IMMSC will organise talks and workshops featuring industry speakers and trainers who will impart relevant knowledge, share experiences, and conduct practical activities to help members expand their understanding of marketing.
It will also build lasting and meaningful relationships with partner organisations, organise industry visits to give members insights into the marketing profession, especially the real-world application of marketing concepts learned and career opportunities available to graduates. In addition, it will invite students of other varsities to participate in IMMSC activities to strengthen ties, share ideas and network.
Dr. Shamsul Kamariah said the establishment of the student charter is timely and fully aligns with Curtin University’s strategic objective to offer a distinctive student experience that focuses on leadership, industry linkages and global citizenship.
“I am confident the IMMSC will help enhance the student learning experience at Curtin Malaysia through its activities and strong leadership,” Dr. Shamsul Kamariah remarked.
Acting Dean of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, Associate Professor Pauline Ho, said the student charter will expose students to new marketing thinking and strategies, which will be very beneficial in the digital economy and Industry 4.0 landscape.
Meanwhile, Dato’ Sharifah Ismail commended the founding students on their initiative and hard work in establishing the first IMM student charter, saying it was a historical milestone for both the IMM and Curtin Malaysia.
“We look forward to supporting the IMMSC’s programmes and activities, and working towards enhancing the marketing, organisational and leadership skills of its members and the wider student community at Curtin Malaysia,” said Dato’ Sharifah.
The Institute of Marketing Malaysia, which is headquartered in Petaling Jaya, Selangor was founded in 1977 for the purpose of serving the marketing fraternity in Malaysia. The Institute assists, trains and brings together marketers from various businesses and industries with the goal of improving the marketing skills of its members.
