Curtin reaches new heights in prestigious global rankings

Curtin maintains significant footprint in Malaysia through its campus in Miri, Sarawak.

Miri – 14 June 2022 – Curtin University has achieved its highest-ever result in the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) by rising to 193rd globally, and continues to be positioned in the top one per cent of universities worldwide.

The 2023 QSWUR results showed that Curtin performed among the top universities across the world, with a rise in the number citations per faculty, indicating the impact and quality of its scientific work.

Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said Curtin’s rise through the ranks was largely attributable to the University’s high-quality research and an increase in citations.

“Curtin has continued to cement its global reputation as an outstanding place for impactful research and learning with impressive rises in the numbers of research papers, total citations and citations per faculty – achieving 67th globally for citations per faculty,” Professor Hayne said.

“This ranking result also highlights the importance of Curtin’s international footprint across Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius.

“Curtin continues to attract the very best teachers and academics from around the world, ranking 40th globally for our international faculty ratio, which demonstrates Curtin’s strong global outlook and multinational, multicultural environment. This rich environment provides an excellent educational opportunity for our students here in Australia and in our campuses around the Indian Ocean rim.”

In Malaysia, news of this latest achievement was well received at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), Curtin’s earliest and largest global campus and hub in the ASEAN region, located in Miri, Sarawak.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig said the achievement is a clear indicator of Curtin’s ability to harness its strengths as a global and innovative institution, not to mention its excellence, agility and resilience even in times of extraordinary change and uncertainty.

“It shows Curtin’s ever-growing reputation across all its locations for delivering the highest standards of teaching and learning to ensure all students achieve their potential and maximise opportunities during their time at university,” Professor Leunig said.

“In Sarawak, we remain the highest-ranked university across all the metrics and this is highly regarded by students, government, industry and the community. Curtin maintains a significant educational and research footprint in Malaysia at our campus,” he added.

With an expanding global presence, including locations in Western Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius, Curtin has in recent years experienced a rapid rise up the international university rankings, and as a university that never settles, continues to develop existing partnerships and establish new ones in areas relevant to its teaching and research.

The QSWUR evaluates the world’s top 1,400 universities based on the metrics of research performance, internationalisation, academic reputation and employer reputation.

The 2023 edition analysed more than 2,400 institutions across the globe including 16.4 million recorded publications and 117.8 million recorded citations.

The results are released annually by global higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds.
