Petroleum Engineering Internship Fair connects students to oil and gas industry

Miri – 16 October 2014 – 50 third and fourth-year petroleum engineering students of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) attending the recent Petroleum Engineering Internship Fair 2014 at the university got to meet oil and gas industry representatives and find out more about career opportunities in the industry.

The inaugural event was organised by the university’s School of Engineering and Science and the Curtin University Sarawak Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter.

Representing the industry were Morni bin Ahmad, Samsul Bari bin M. Said and Sharifah Masniah from PETRONAS; Siti Rahanah Amat Dollah, Nico Holleman, Valsan Vevakanandan and Chuan Heng Choo from Shell Malaysia; and Nicholas Colbeck from Roc Oil Company Limited.

Also present were Curtin Sarawak’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia, Dean of School of Engineering and Science Professor Michael Cloke and Head of Department of Chemical Engineering Associate Professor Chua Han Bing.

The fair aimed to enhance industrial links between Curtin Sarawak and various oil and gas companies through the promotion of postgraduate programmes, research activities and internship placements.

During the event, the students were given a talk on internship opportunities and requirements for internship placements in the oil and gas industry and a briefing on SPE Student Chapter membership and activities. There was also a number of exhibition booths offering relevant information.

The Curtin University Sarawak SPE Student Chapter was established in March 2013 and currently has about 200 members. It is one of only four SPE student chapters in Malaysia and the first in East Malaysia.

In June this year, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) awarded the Curtin University Sarawak SPE Student Chapter its Gold Standard Student Chapter 2014 Award. Curtin Sarawak is among 19 universities from the Netherlands, Germany, Scotland, United States, Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia to be recognised with the award.

SPE is the largest individual-member organisation serving managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals worldwide in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. Its student chapters are university-based groups of SPE student members. Presently, there are over 300 SPE student chapters worldwide.
