Public invited to ‘Explore & Experience’ at Curtin Malaysia Carnival on 21 September

Miri – 17 August 2019 – Potential students and members of the public in Miri and other locations interested to know more about Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) are invited to the ‘Curtin Malaysia Carnival 2019 – 20th Anniversary Edition’ at its campus here on 21 September 2019.

This year’s event will be Curtin Malaysia’s thirteenth open day event and one of the key highlights of its 20th anniversary celebration this year.

Themed ‘Explore & Experience’, the Carnival it will be open from 10 am to 5pm and will give visitors an exciting glimpse of life at Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia.

It will offer visitors fun, hands-on learning experiences in a festival-like atmosphere, the chance to explore the campus, learn about courses offered, and get further insights from lecturers and students.

It will continue to feature the popular Future Students Hub where potential students can gather information on courses, scholarships and enrolment, and Faculty Showcases highlighting the teaching and research excellence of Curtin Malaysia’s three faculties and graduate school. Key to these showcases will be the promotion of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

In addition, visitors will get to learn about innovations in engineering, science and technology, and the intriguing aspects of business and commerce, as well as the arts, particularly media and language and cultural studies.

There will also be faculty-run competitions open to teams from secondary schools, offering attractive prizes and giveaways for participating teams. They include a ‘Snakes & Ladders Warrior’ giant board game competition organised by the Faculty of Business, the ‘Curtin Engineering and Science Quiz 2019’ by the Faculty of Engineering and Science, and ‘Curtin Spelling Bee 2019’ by the Faculty of Humanities.

The signature competition will be the ‘Curtin Croc Challenge 4.0: The App Hack-a-Thon’, Curtin Malaysia’s iconic annual crocodile-themed electronic design competition organised by its Faculty of Engineering and Science and Office of Research and Development. Schools in Miri, Brunei and Sabah have been invited to compete for cash awards and other prizes.

“Whether you’re an interested member of the public, or a future student, parent or teacher, you’re sure to get a lot out of the activities throughout the day,” remarked Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski.

Professor Mienczakowski said everyone is welcome to the event which attracts thousands of visitors each year, including hundreds of secondary school students accompanied by teachers and school counsellors from Miri, and smaller visiting groups from selected schools in Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah and West Malaysia.

Regular visitors to the Carnival will delight in perennial attractions like the live entertainment, including musical and cultural performances by Curtin students, and the wide variety of food, retail and activity stalls run by student clubs and local businesses. Organisations and businesses interested to rent stalls can contact Curtin Malaysia’s Corporate Communications Department at 085-630181. Event sponsors are entitled to free booths.

In support of local charities and non-governmental organisations, the event will feature a ‘Community Showcase’ where visitors can learn more about various charitable and community causes in Miri.

Other attractions on the cards include a drone racing demonstration, an e-gaming competition and an artisan market.

The event is being supported by the Miri City Council for the tenth consecutive year, as well as by a number of corporate sponsors. Companies seeking sponsorship and branding opportunities can also contact the university’s Corporate Communications Department.
