TAR UC Bolsters Ties with Construction Industry Players

Being aware of the importance of infusing industry relevance into academic learning, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) has strengthened its collaboration with major players in the Malaysian construction industry at the TAR UC – PLYTEC symposium on 2 December 2019, jointly organised by TAR UC with PLYTEC Formwork System Industries Sdn Bhd, Trimble Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and BSI Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and supported by Malaysia Productivity Corporation (‘MPC’).

At the symposium, which had the theme “Digital Transformation for Future Construction Industry”, three Memorandums of Understanding (‘MoU’) were also signed by TAR UC with BIM Engineering Solution and Technology Sdn Bhd, Trimble Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd and BSI Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The event was graced by Tian Chua, Special Advisor to the Minister of Works and Chairman of MPC.

These MoUs will enhance the academia-industry collaborations between TAR UC and major players in the construction industry, and also drive the implementation of Building Information Modelling (‘BIM’) processes in Malaysia. This is in line with the CIDB’s (Construction Industry Development Board) Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020.

TAR UC is also one of two institutions of higher learning in Malaysia to be appointed as a Tekla Authorised Training Centre by Trimble Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd. This authorises TAR UC to train students in the Faculty of Built Environment (‘FOBE’) on using BIM software, with a syllabus jointly developed by TAR UC, BIM Engineering Solution and Technology Sdn Bhd, Trimble Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd, and BSI Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

“I would like congratulate TAR UC for organising this symposium and bringing together major industry players to participate in this event,” said Tian Chua. “The construction industry in Malaysia will continue to be shaped by new technologies, and a change in mindset is required to keep the industry moving forward. I am happy to know that TAR UC is alert to the latest trends and changes, and is leading the way by producing graduates of high calibre and fulfilling the needs of the construction industry and the country.”

“Digitalisation of the construction industry has been increasing in recent years, and TAR UC has been working very closely with industry players to keep abreast of the changes. Therefore, this symposium couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC. “I hope that our graduates will continue to stay relevant by keeping themselves updated with knowledge of the newest technologies in the construction industry.”

Speakers at the symposium included Mr Mohd Fakhran Asyraq, Technical Engineer, CIDB E-Construct Services Sdn. Bhd., Dr Alex Wong, CEO and Co- Founder of RedBite and Embedded Researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK, Ts Ir Edward Han, Technical Director of PLYTEC, Mr Alfred H’ng, Services and Consulting Director of Trimble, Mr Wilson Ong, Built Environment Sector Lead, British Standard Institution Group, and Mr Redza Syah Azwan, BIM Lead, UEM Sunrise.
