A University of Southampton Malaysia student has won the prestigious Centennial Scholarship sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), UK for the second consecutive year.

Final year Aeronautics and Astronautics student Lian Ming Goh is enrolled in the University of Southampton Malaysia split-campus engineering programme, spending his first two years studying the Master’s of Engineering (MEng) in the campus in Johor, Malaysia before transitioning to the UK campus in 2018.

“Winning this award serves as strong motivation and a reminder that as long as I persevere, I have the potential to make a real change and to contribute significantly to the aerospace community. It will also show that I have not just the technical skills developed from my degree but also the leadership potential,” he said.

The Royal Aeronautical Society created the Centennial Scholarship to celebrate one hundred years of flight and to look forward to the next generation of aerospace pioneers and experts in the 21st Century.

It is clear talking to Lian Ming that he is a highly motivated individual and wants to ensure the educational opportunities his parents have provided gives him the best chance in his chosen career “My parents have always been supporting my education and I am forever grateful to their continuous support on my pursuit to work in the space industry, which is an industry that has limited career opportunities in my home country,” he said. In particular, he singles out his father as the main inspiration “My father reflects a symbol of not giving up when the going gets tough and being mentally strong,” he added.

Asked about his hopes for the future of the Aeronautics industry and its future he said “I hope that both the Aeronautics and Astronautics industry, would grow to always have a good balance between the digitalisation of technology and the easiness of obtaining information and knowledge in this area alongside the sustainability of maintaining the skillset, knowledge, and most importantly the community of creators and following successors of such revolutionary technologies.

In the long run, I wish to bring back my expertise, my network, and my energy to my home country and help grow the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) space industry. My goal is to work towards a globally supportive space community where individuals will be able to pursue a space-related career unconstrained by socioeconomic backgrounds.”
