UTAR and JobStreet.com jointly launched the JobStreet Corner at the Main Library, UTAR Kampar Campus on 28 June 2018.

Representing UTAR at the launch were President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik and Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong. JobStreet.com was represented by its Regional Senior Manager Dominic Wong and Employability Advisor Edmund Teh.

Recalling UTAR’s long-standing relationship with JobStreet.com since the first signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) in 2010 which sprouted several joint research projects, Prof Chuah also mentioned that UTAR is indebted to JobStreet.com’s founder Mark Chang for his generosity in awarding the annual JobStreet Best Graduate Award since 2010 to an exemplary graduate of each faculty during the convocation. “UTAR is what it is today because of industry partners like JobStreet whose assistance and support have been instrumental,” said Prof Chuah, who also announced the University’s most recent achievement of being ranked Top 111 – 120 in the Times Higher Education Asia-Pacific University Rankings 2018 and accrediting the success to the unending support from various stakeholders. Also congratulating the students and some UTAR staff on being handpicked as JobStreet Ambassadors, the UTAR President expressed his hope that these ambassadors will work closely with both UTAR and JobStreet to fly the flags of both organisations high. “This programme is important for personal development. For the students, you build your own character and develop skills through the trainings provided by JobStreet.com as well as by guiding your fellow peers to register a JobStreet account and giving them advice on employment processes, career choices and so on,” he advised, adding that both UTAR and JobStreet.com will work closely for many more years to come.

Thanking UTAR for being a part of JobStreet.com’s Graduate Employability Programme, Wong said, “JobStreet.com is very pleased to be able to collaborate with a progressive and prestigious university like UTAR in developing industry-ready graduates through our joint programmes such as Career Services Certification and Student Ambassador Certification.” The Regional Senior Manager also introduced that in these programmes, selected Career Services staff are exposed and trained in workings of the recruitment and job matching process of JobStreet.com’s system. Similarly, the student ambassadors are trained in the JobStreet.com workshop designed to help them to assist and guide fellow students to be more job market ready. According to Wong, the workshop also deepens the ambassadors’ understanding on the job market dynamics, leadership skills and how to conduct resume clinics. “As part of our shared goals, we look forward to having more partnerships in rolling out more initiative with UTAR so that we can reach out to many more students and helping them to be career-ready and ultimately bridge the employment gaps in Malaysia,” he concluded.

This was followed by a certificate presentation session where Wong, accompanied by Prof Chuah, presented the JobStreet Ambassadors certificates and badges. The list of JobStreet Ambassadors (in alphabetical order) as follows:

UTAR and JobStreet.com’s partnership dates back to 2010 following the inking of the inaugural MoU. The MoU was subsequently renewed in 2013 and 2015 exploring collaborative research, job placements, recruitments and joint organisation of career fairs and conferences.

From 2009 to 2011, a research project on the development of job matching algorithm with collective learning methods under the helm of UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat was conducted and the project was funded by JobStreet.com. Another research project on labour market study of selected Southeast Asian countries was also conducted from 2010 to 2012 in collaboration with JobStreet.com.

Another highlight of the collaboration was the fruition of a system which allows potential employers to verify degree qualifications of UTAR graduates instantly. The system has helped to effectively safeguard UTAR degrees from being forged.

The strong ties are also reflected by the presence of JobStreet.com in the activities organised by departments such as the Department of Alumni Relations and Placement’s Career Day by engaging with UTAR students and graduands at career booths or delivering career talks.

Founded in Malaysia in 1997, JobStreet.com is Asia’s leading online employment marketplace. It facilitates the matching and communication of job opportunities between jobseekers and employers in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. In November 2014, JobStreet.com became part of the Australian Stock Exchange-listed SEEK Limited – the world’s largest online employment marketplace by market capitalisation.

There are currently over 51,000 UTAR graduates who are registered with JobStreet.com. The JobStreet Corner is also available at Mary KUOK Pick Hoo Library, UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
