Adding to the list of UTAR achievements was Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations (PR) graduate Chan Shu Ting, who was awarded the “Supernewsroom Young PR Professional Award 2018” on 20 July 2018 at Kampar Campus.

The award was presented by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of intelectasia Consultancy and Founder of Supernewsroom Manminder Kaur Dhillon, who is also the Industry Advisor (IA) for UTAR’s Department of Public Relations. Others present at the award ceremony were intelectasia Chief Strategy Officer Puspavathy Ramaloo, former IA and Executive Director of JLPW Communications Sdn Bhd Jackie Leong Lai Yin, Department of Public Relations Head Dr Noew Hooi San and students.

Chan, the third recipient of the award, received RM500 cash prize. She was selected among three shortlisted names for the interview process with Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) Dean, Deputy Dean, Head of Department and Manminder. Chan was selected based on her excellent academic, soft skills and co-curriculum performances. Apart from acknowledging students for their outstanding achievements, the award also aims to recognise students’ excellence in their academic journey as well as to encourage their continuous contributions to the field of PR and in their future career.

“This award would not be possible without the lecturers who have not only taught me well, but also provided guidance from their expertise and experiences. UTAR has provided me with a well-structured syllabus and has equipped me with both soft skills and hard skills. The lessons I learnt in my three-year university life has given me exposure to event management and enabled me to understand the societal needs. Along with the industrial training, I was able to experience the working environment and was given the opportunity to meet professional PR practitioners. Therefore, I am grateful to UTAR for its education has truly prepared me for my future career and the achievements I made add value to my portfolio,” enthused Chan.

She also added, “To receive the award is certainly my honour. Throughout my study years I learnt that for one to truly excel, one must be willing to learn from mistakes and to be able to accept criticisms from others. I hope this award will also motivate other PR students to excel in their academics and co-curriculum.”

Chan was also the President for the “WOW Kampar” campaign, which won the Gold Award in Malaysia PR Awards (MPRA) 2016/2017. The campaign was held in collaboration with MDKpr, in conjunction with Visit Perak Year 2017, which took place from 24 to 26 March 2017 at Kampar. The campaign was also awarded the “Anugerah Galakan Kecemerlangan Acara” by the Perak State Government.

Supernewsroom Young PR Professional Award was inaugurated to encourage and recognise PR students for their exceptional dedication, outstanding achievements and academic excellence throughout their academic journey. It is an initiative by UTAR and intelectasia Consultancy to understand and appreciate young PR talents who will help contribute to developing a collaborative network for advancing education and vocation.
